The One Thing Necessary

Day 2: The One Thing Necessary

Reading: Luke 10:38-42

Devotional: Martha's distraction wasn't sinful—it was service. Yet Jesus called it unnecessary compared to Mary's choice.

Before we follow Jesus, we must learn to be with Jesus. The posture of devotion precedes the direction of discipleship. Mary sat, listened, and received. This wasn't laziness; it was wisdom.

In our achievement-driven culture, sitting feels counterproductive. We equate busyness with faithfulness. But intimacy with Christ cannot be rushed or multitasked. What distractions are keeping you from sitting at Jesus' feet? What "good things" are crowding out the "one thing necessary"?

Today, resist the urge to perform and instead choose presence. Let your pursuit of knowing Christ begin with simply being with Christ. The better part is still available to those who choose it.
