Motive Over Ministry
Reading: Acts 8:18-24; Proverbs 4:23
Devotional: Simon believed. Simon was baptized. But when he saw the power of the Holy Spirit, something old and dangerous surfaced in him. He wanted the power not to glorify God but to reclaim the spotlight he had lost. Peter's response was immediate and severe: his heart was not right before God. Proverbs 4:23 instructs us to guard the heart above everything else, because everything we do flows from it.
It is entirely possible to pursue what God does because of what it does for your reputation rather than for his glory. God is not looking for people who chase influence. He is looking for surrendered hearts with pure motives.
Reflection: Honestly examine your spiritual pursuits. Are they driven by a desire to be known by God, or to be seen by people?
